Waltz With Bashir reactions/Slumdog Millionaire

Waltz With Bashir was very good, but also very emotionally heavy. The subject matter plays a big role in this of course, but a lot of it stems (for me, at least) from everyone's inability to do anything about it; they could only watch helplessly as a few thousand innocent people were dying a few hundred yards away from them.

The ending is crushing. I won't tell you why, because I think that it would somewhat downplay its effectiveness. But it's difficult to watch, I'll tell you that much.

Overall, it effectively portrays war in a very unique way. The fact that its animated really doesn't take away any of its oomph-factor (and by the way, the animation and the way it's utilized is pretty cool). The soundtrack's great, too!

Tonight, I saw Slumdog Millionaire. It was pretty good, though a bit disappointing given the massive amount of hype it's been getting. Nonetheless, it's brilliantly shot; seriously, there's some really beautiful stuff going on here. Aaaand, it too had a great soundtrack!

Finally, AMC theaters are showing all of the Best Picture nominees in a row the day before the Oscars. I'll probably have to do that (despite the lack of an AMC in Denton)...

Juggling Tasks and a Poem About the Internet

A series of events involving a sink full of dishes and a lack of food in the cupboards lead me to eat at Pei Wei tonight, where I got a fortune cookie that said, "Your ability to juggle many tasks will take you far." I felt it was oddly appropriate, given that I started up three blogs. Not only that, but on the way to Pei Wei I was listening to King Khan and the Shrines and thinking, "Man, I need to get my saxophone out again. It would be really cool to be in a band like that." Not only that, but even earlier in the day I was playing guitar along to Deerhunter songs, thinking, "Man, I could probably start a band like this and it wouldn't suck all that much. I should do that." Granted, those last two weren't actual endeavors, but, uh... erm... yeah. Here's a poem that I wrote today about the Internet.

The Internet Has Requested To Be Your Friend
By Victor Monterroso

I’m not some big truck but I may as well be
You dump all your filth and your memes into me.
My awesome potential and progress, you rob
And now an electronic waste bin’s my job.

But pay no attention to me my dear friend
Around here in my parts, the fun never ends!
So step on inside (please ignore all the noobs)
And whisk straight away down my series of tubes!

There’s Myspace and Facebook and oh so much more
For all of this you can thank mister Al Gore.
You’ll waste all your time doing this and/or that
And spend all day captioning pictures of cats.

The bloggers and /b/tards are all here, of course
And Wikis are great (this opinion’s unsourced)!
Now Tay Zonday’s just started singing a song
A fat guy with headphones will boogie along.

Be wary, my friend, for we come to a site
It churns brave men’s stomachs and gives them a fright.
Our friends here at 4chan will share all their quips
They’re nice, for they heard that you like that Mudkip.

Take heed my dear reader, I really don’t mind
I’m actually not phased by the tripe that you’ll find.
So go right ahead, you can do me your worst
These trends sure are bad but they’re sure not the first.

Your social life’s floundering? Well, never do fear
For soon you will see that the whole world is here!
No reason to leave, for you’ve so much to do
Hey look! Ms. Pelosi has just Rickrolled you!

Well hey there.

Welcome to There You Go, the blog where I post day-to-day things and other assorted junk that does not relate to short fiction or cartoons. The name comes from a conversation I once had with a woman who had dissociative identity disorder (the subtext was her response). "There You Go" was taken as a URL, so I took to referencing a Mystery Science Theater 3000 joke from this short (at forty-five seconds):

So there you go.

Anyways, like I said, I'll be posting assorted whatnotery here at my leisure. There is no set schedule for updates, so I guess that just means you have to check back often!

The most exciting thing that happened to me today was Glass Night at Lucky Lou's ($3 pint of beer, and you get to keep the glass it comes in). The beer was Franconia with a choice of lager, wheat, or dunkel beer (I took the last of these options). For some reason, it came in a Killian's glass. It was all right though, but not near as good as the Anchor from last week.

Anyways, as exciting as that was, I'll be signing off for now. Until next time, dudes.
